My son loves Under Armour, in fact he lives in it. But he just might love pizza even more, especially when it involves a party at school. In his mind, that party is his victory. But first he had to pass the Fifty States exam to get to the finish line. Overwhelmed at not knowing all the answers, he was faced with a choice. Do the best he can and trust his under armour or not. Well, he chose the bad choice you guessed it, cheat with his friend. Both ended up with two incorrect answers, the same incorrect answers.
Obviously email from the teacher yesterday…fun times. One beautiful hot mess right there.😳
My son and his friend didn’t make a mistake that hasn’t happened before, it’s not all that different from mistakes we can all make. This Momma has certainly had her share of mishaps. You see, when we feel overwhelmed at the unknown in front of us, we can all easily try to take matters in our own hands and sometimes, yep…it can turn in to one hot mess.
Sadly both boys missed out on the victory. They had the under armour, they had the knowledge and the ability right within but just couldn’t be certain of victory with the small detail of the unknown. Had they had faith in that armour even with the two unknown incorrect answers they would have passed the exam. They would have had the pizza victory.
Oh how I can relate to this on so many levels. Of course your Momma forgives you. Who am I to judge. It really doesn’t matter how and who and why this all transpired because it is about the human emotion and weakness any one of us can relate to in life. Notice I’m not concerned about who brought who down in this mess. Why? Because everyone gets in messes, they both got in the mess together. Sweet boy, your teacher gets it, Momma gets it and I know that friends parents get it too. We are all in this together. But yes we are grounded and there is that little thing called naturally no pizza for you. The important thing is to learn from it. Funny thing, I just had to have the same conversation with two fifth grade girls this morning. Their victory was different but the story is the same.
Rewind back to middle of the night wide awake not able to sleep. The overwhelming feeling of not having enough arsenal for the unknown ahead mixed with the need for reassurance. I need a guarantee, why not that answer come on Jesus I need certainty. But God doesn’t usually answer that way, he answers by calling us to trust in His armour and not take it on ourselves. Once we do that we can get ourselves in to all kinds of beautiful hot mess water.
Fast forward to lunch break, time to read. Oh wow, yes Jesus thank you for making this so relevant to my sleepy mind. Love you!
Joshua 5:13-14 (NIV) “Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, ‘Are you for us or for our enemies?’”
“Neither, but as commander of the army of the LORD I have come.”
Joshua made the mistake of hesitancy because he was looking for that reassurance. He could have gone down the wrong road completely trying to take hold of victory on his own. But that is precisely when we miss the victory and find the hot mess instead.
Worry less, worship more. Under Armour On… Spot On.
Dear Jesus, I have made a bad choice and I’m sorry for my behavior. I get it sweet precious nine year old. I totally get it. ❤️
You can have all this world, just give me Jesus.
Loved By Grace,
